Colic Relief for Babies (and Moms!)

Colic Relief for Babies (and Moms!)

As a mom, long crying episodes can be challenging and exhausting to deal with and get through. I go down the list of things to do for my baby boy when he is uncomfortable and crying excessively, things like changing diapers, feeding him a bottle, making sure he’s not too hot or cold, etc. There are some moments when I just can’t seem to figure out what baby needs.

My baby boy is 7 months old and is currently teething. Teething can be very painful for babies, causing discomfort and uncontrollable crying episodes. To help relieve his pain, I give him cold teething rings, teething tablets, and lots of snuggles.

Crying is a way for babies to express how they feel. All babies cry. It’s natural. In their first year of life, babies are learning to communicate, and crying is a way for them to express themselves. However, some babies can cry for long periods of time without responding to your usual comforting methods. Among the reasons for excessive crying is digestive discomfort, and Infantile colic is a symptom of digestive discomfort.

What is colic?

Colic is usually when a healthy baby cries for more than 3 hours a day, at least 3 days a week, for over 3 weeks. It usually starts in the first few weeks of life. Babies may experience increased crying in the evening and at night.

Research indicates that the type of bacteria in the infant’s digestive system may determine whether a child is colicky. This suggests a role for probiotics to help support a balance of good bacteria in the digestive tract of colicky infants. In particular, the probiotic Lactobacillus reuteri has been clinically shown in multiple studies to reducing crying time in colicky infants.

Comforting probiotics are a great way to improve the good bacteria in baby’s digestive system.
