When the kids are at home, keeping them hydrated can be a bit of a challenge.
But what if you could make drinking water a fun experience?
Whether you’re hanging out at home, the kids have friends over or you’re out and about, a few clever strategies can make quenching their thirst a breeze.
By creating activities that centre on water, they’ll be sipping away happily before you (or they) know it.
We’ve got plenty of fun ideas to share, so grab your reusable bottle and let’s dive on in!
5 Fun Activities to Keep the Kids Hydrated
1. Splash and Sip Outdoor Party
What do kids love more than parties? Water parks!
Creating your own splash zone outdoor party is a great way to help the kids cool off, while also helping them stay hydrated.
And you don’t even need a backyard pool to make it a success.
Sprinklers, mini pools, slip-and-slides and even water pistols can all be used to create different activities for the kids to enjoy.
To keep them hydrated while they’re having fun, set up some hydration stations, complete with fun straws, colorful cups and jugs of infused water, homemade lemonade, or delicious iced teas.
You can even use insulated reusable cups with lids to keep everything where it’s meant to be.
2. Frozen Treats Workshop
Homemade frozen treats can be a great way to stay hydrated for kids and adults alike.
Getting the kids involved in making homemade ice pops, smoothies and other treats will get their curious minds thinking about the delicious hydrating snacks they can sip on.
As well as being hydrating and fun, homemade frozen treats allow you to pick exactly what’s going into them, making them as nutritious as you like.
Here’s a few easy recipes to try:
- Banana Berry Popsicles: Blend up some bananas and berries, freezing them in ice-pop makers for a delicious and healthy treat. For a sweet surprise, add in berry pieces before popping them in the freezer.
- Mango Sunset Iced Tea: Lightly brew up some tea, cool, and blend with fresh or frozen mango pieces. Crush up a punnett or two of raspberries, using a strainer to catch the seeds and pulp. Pour the blended mango tea into a cup, top with a swirl of raspberry juice, and serve.
- Watermelon Sorbet Surprise: For a super fun, nutritious and H2O-packed dessert, try shaving some frozen watermelon with a squeeze of lemon juice — delicious!
3. Hydration Scavenger Hunt
Watch the kids get excited when you tell them you’ve planned a scavenger hunt.
One of the best parts about scavenger hunts is they can be as short or long as you like, keeping kids busy for the perfect amount of time.
To keep the kids hydrated during their adventures, make some of the clues lead to water stations or make tasks involving drinking some delicious water in order to get to the next step.
For example, you could have a clue that leads to the fridge, with the next clue telling them to drink a glass of yummy infused water to receive their next clue.
Their prize?
What about some of those delicious homemade frozen treats to quench their thirst after all that fun.
4. Fruit Crafts
They say don’t play with your food, but we’ll make an exception for this one.
Fruit is full of water so is great for a snack that helps keep the kids hydrated too.
But rather than just a normal plate of fruit, why not make it fun with some fruity arts and crafts?
Fruit crafts are a fun way to help kids improve their fine motor skills, but it also gives you a chance to sneak in some extra hydrating berries, pieces of watermelon, apple slices and more.
You can keep it simple by giving the kids some fruit slices and vegetables cut into fun shapes to create a picture.
Or, for the older kids, add toothpicks to the mix and they can make their own little sculptures.
And at the end, they have a healthy snack to munch on to keep them distracted even longer. Win-win!
5. Mocktail Making Class
Why not get science-y in the kitchen with a mocktail lab. The kids will love coming up with their own mocktail creations and mixtures.
All you’ll need to run your own mocktail making class at home is a shaker or two, ice, fresh juices, fresh fruits, and a few garnishes like cocktail umbrellas and fruit pieces.
If your kids are a little older, you can even have them muddle together fruits and flavors to create new, unique and tasty drinks.
It’s a fun way for the kids to stay busy, keep hydrated and even find some new favorite flavors along the way.
There are so many fun ways to keep the kids entertained and hydrated after school, on weekends and the school holidays.
With a little creativity, you can get the kids involved in their own H2O quenching needs, making quenching that thirst a fun experience for all!
