  • Is Your Busy Schedule Affecting Your Children’s Behavior?

Is Your Busy Schedule Affecting Your Children's Behavior

Think your busy schedule is only running you ragged? The truth is, it may be affecting your family more than you know–even if you’re the only one who is busy. The old saying “no man is an island” couldn’t be more true for overworked moms. Here are four ways your busy schedule might be causing unintended consequences in your family.

Is Your Busy Schedule Affecting Your Children’s Behavior?

    1. You Don’t Spend as Much Time With Your Children As You Should

Yes, your children will likely always want more attention than you could reasonably give them, and no, there is nothing wrong with letting your kids play by themselves for a while so you can work. If you are constantly telling your children “one more minute” or choosing work over them, however, they will feel neglected and they will start to act out to get your attention.

    2. You Take the Easy Way Out When It’s Time to Discipline

When your children start to act up (as they inevitably will at times), you have a choice. You can put work aside for a minute, sit down with your children and discipline and instruct them properly. Or you can yell at them to stop what they are doing and go play somewhere else. Unfortunately, for many busy moms, the second happens far more often than we’d like to admit. Not only is this not fun for anyone, but since the issues aren’t resolved, they are more likely to pop up again in the future.

    3. You’re Constantly Tired and Grouchy

When life, work and home responsibilities begin to pile up, taking the time to take care of your health is often one of the first things to go. This is unfortunate, because self-care is so important, not only for productivity, but also for being a good mom to your kids. When you are tired, you’re more likely to be grouchy and yell, which in turn only causes your kids to act up more.

    4. You Don’t Really Know What Your Children are Up To

You have an idea what your kids are doing while you are working, but do you really? How many times have they broken something or made a huge mess that could have been avoided if you had been paying attention? What real issues are they struggling with in school or in life that you need to address but don’t know about? The truth is, you’ll never know until you take the time to find out.

4 Ways Your Busy Schedule Is Hurting Your Family

5 Signs Your Schedule is Too Full

Please understand, this post is not intended to make you feel guilty or to add additional burdens to your already overloaded plate. Instead, it is to encourage you to take a good, hard look at your life and the way it has been going lately. You work hard for your family–but do you really? Or are you really just working hard at your family’s expense? If so, it may be time to make some positive changes.

    green living tips for families

Are you interested in living a greener life as a mom? Do you want to find ways for your family to help pitch in towards a greener life? Living a green life doesn’t have to be hard! In fact, it can be fun when you work together as a family to find ways to create a healthier environment. Follow these steps below and you’ll be on your way to a greener life before you know it!

    Green Living Tips for Families

    1. Invest in a reusable water bottle for each member of your family.

In the past, I was guilty of purchasing cases of water that I found on sale at the store each week. I would bring up to 8 cases of water home each month, about two per week. If you do the math, that means we were throwing away 192 plastic bottles a month, or 2,304 bottles per year. That’s a lot of water bottles and a lot of waste. Earlier this year, we decided we were going to stop wasting and start reusing. We invested in reusable water bottles for each member of our family, including our girls. We purchased a new water filter pitcher for our refrigerator and we refill our water bottles every day as needed. My girls love their water bottles. They fill up their water bottles before we head out on road trips so that we don’t have to stop and purchase bottled drinks along the way!

    2. Clean with natural cleaning products.

Make the switch to natural cleaning products that are non-toxic and multi-purpose.  If you have young children in the home, you may be concerned about dangerous chemicals in cleaning products and worried that your loved one may get into those toxic products. Natural cleaning products such as vinegar and baking soda are perfect to have on hand for your cleaning needs and they are great for the environment. These products are also very affordable and can go a long way saving you money, too!

    3.  Switch to eco-friendly batteries.

How many kids toys do you have around your home that require batteries? I know we have several. Replace the batteries in toys with the new Energizer EcoAdvanced Batteries available at Walmart! We just replaced the batteries in this walking horse.

    4. Reuse containers.

I’m not a fan of tossing out perfectly good containers that can be used for other things. We go through a lot of containers around here. My kids love to eat foods like yogurt, pudding, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, and other snacks that come in handy little containers. Instead of tossing these containers, reuse them for art projects such as painting or for snacks, especially for on the go. If you don’t plan to use them, consider recycling the plastic or donating clean containers to teachers at school that may be able to use them (art teachers, preschool teachers to use for snacks, etc.)

    5. Visit your local recycling center as a family.

Once a week we load up our plastic containers, glass bottles, cardboard boxes, and other recyclables and head down to our local recycling center to dispose of these items in the appropriate bins. There’s even a bin at the end of the loop that allows us to donate any clothes or shoes! Our children come with us so that they can learn the importance of recycling at a young age.  Get the kids involved and allow them to place contents in the appropriate bins so that they can feel like they are contributing to a greener environment!

  • How to Organize Books for Kids

Do you have a lot of kids books at home? Consider a home organization system! Find out how to organize books for kids below.

Reading is very important to me and my family. I’ve been trying to set a good example as a mom lately by visiting our local library often and checking out books. It’s too easy at times to become so busy and let books collect dust, but I’ve been intentionally setting time aside to read every day. My kids see me reading and because of this, I am inspiring them to read, too. I love to take them to the kid’s section of the library as well so that they can check out books, too. My kids love using their own library cards!

How to Help Children Read Better

Now that the back-to-school season is approaching, I thought it would be fun to share a few cute book cases that you can use to organize your kid’s at home library! Add a cute rug or a cozy chair to make it a place where your child will want to spend a lot of time reading!

  • Unicorn Candy Machine

    Unicorn Candy Machine

Learn how to make this adorable Unicorn Candy Machine! This simple craft is fun to make. Create yours today and place your child’s favorite candy inside!

    Unicorn Candy Machine

I love getting my daughters involved in crafting and putting their imaginations to work. When I told my girls we were going to be making faux candy “machines” my youngest daughter immediately said, “I want to make mine a unicorn!” Unicorns seem to be everywhere right now and a favorite among most little girls, so I was all too excited about her idea. We made two different versions of the unicorn, but these could easily be transformed into your child’s favorite character!

    Supplies:

    Directions:

    1. Use the Crayola clay to make your horn and let dry overnight. We cut the base of our horn at an angle. Paint once it is dry (it will still be soft, but it’s ok).

    2. Paint terra-cotta pot and saucer. Spray with adhesive spray and then sprinkle glitter and allow time to dry.

    3. Place pot top down on your work surface. This will be the base of your “machine.” Hot glue the fish bowl (or mason jar) to the top of the base. Place saucer top down on top of the bowl.

    4. Hot glue the wing nut to the base as the “knob” to your machine.

    Now it’s time to accessorize!

    5. Cut ears for your unicorn using the felt. The white will be the outer year and the pink will be the inner ear. Glue the two pieces together and then glue the ears to the top of your machine.

    6. Trim feathery boa to fit around the base of your bowl and hot glue.

    7. Glue the horn on the center of the top, towards the front.

    8. Hot glue your paper flowers around the base of the horn and use black pain to draw the eyes and lashes on the front of the bowl.

  • Five Reasons You Need to Make Rest a Priority

    logan-nolin-347104-unsplash

When your to-do list gets long and your responsibilities begin to pile up, one of the first things that often gets shoved off of your plate is rest. You wake up early, you stay up late, and you try to cram tasks and efficiency into every corner of your day. While being efficient and making good use of your time is a great way to get things done, it only helps so much. As counter-productive as it sounds, you also need rest if you want to get caught up. Here are five reasons you need to make rest a priority no matter how busy you are.

    1. It Increases Your Productivity

Our bodies aren’t meant to be in “go” mode from sun up to sun down. Both our brains and our bodies need periodic breaks to recharge. While this downtime can seem like wasted time, resting actually improves our productivity, allowing us to get more down than we would have otherwise!

    2. It Improves Your Memory

Our brains process our learning and information when we sleep, clearing out the information we don’t need to remember and storing the information that we do. When we go too long without sleeping or if we try to work on too little sleep, our memory suffers as a result. Taking a nap after studying is actually a great way to improve your ability to recall what you’ve learned.

    3. It Improves Your Mood

Your toddler isn’t the only one who gets cranky when he’s overtired. Moms get cranky when they are tired too. Try to do too much and work too hard without a break, and it won’t be long until you are snapping at your family or until you are just generally unpleasant to be around. Take a quick nap when needed, and your day will go much smoother, allowing you to get more done.

    4. It Improves Your Abilities

Whether you are driving, writing, sewing, cleaning, paying bills or reading, it is difficult to do a good job when you are overly tired. Try to push too hard for too long, and the quality of your work will inevitably suffer, both in terms of efficiency and in terms of quality. If you notice that you’re having difficult producing your best work and you think tiredness may be to blame, a quick nap may be just what you need.

    5. It Improves Your Health

Lastly, sleep is absolutely essential for health. According to WebMD, not getting enough sleep has been linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity. A lack of sleep can even increase your chances of coming down with a cold or the flu, both of which can drastically reduce your ability to be productive. Save your health and your time by getting the rest you need now.

Related: How to Deal With Being Sick as a Mom

Resting doesn’t mean that you have to set everything aside and sleep for three hours. Instead, it can mean a 10-15 minute power nap or walk outside in the fresh air. Even something as simple as taking your lunch break to actually eat lunch instead of to work at your desk can make a big difference.

Do you get enough rest? How can you make rest more of a priority in your busy schedule?

  • How to Teach Kids About Money

How to Teach Kids About Money

How to Teach Kids About Money

My girls are starting to show interest with money at a young age. They see me finding ways to save money and cut costs on a regular basis. My oldest daughter will be entering third grade soon and I feel that she is ready to learn about money. My youngest likes to do what her sister does and this is a great time to get both children involved. As a parent, I need to do the best I can to guide my children to make smart money decisions and choices to last a lifetime.

My girls earn money completing chores and they also receive money for birthdays and holidays. Because they receive their own money and will receive money on occasion for years to come, it’s a great idea to have a plan in place for their own money. The Money Savvy Piggy Banks (pictured at the top of this post) allow my girls to place money in four different areas: save, spend, donate, and invest. This piggy bank provides a fun way to teach about money!

How to Teach Kids About Money

My girls each have a wallet of their own (pictured above) that they are allowed to take when we go shopping. We take the money from the “Spend” area of the piggy bank and place it in their wallets and they are allowed to buy something that they want from the store – usually around $5 or less. During our last shopping trip, my girls each picked out a little craft item to work on at home. When we arrived at the register, the girls gave the cashier the money for their item and received change along with their receipts. I like to have the girls involved in the entire buying process from start to finish.

This last Sunday, I asked my girls to take $1 from the "Donate" section of the piggy bank and place it in the plate at church. This was difficult at first for my oldest daughter. She didn't want to give away her money, but I made sure to talk to her about the importance of giving and she quickly agreed that giving her money was the right thing to do. One thing I've witnessed during this process of saving money is that my oldest daughter is very picky with her own money when she gets the chance to buy something. This shows me that she truly wants to spend it on items that she really wants and loves and doesn't just spend it to be spending money. She chooses what she wants carefully and selectively and this is exactly where I want her to be! How to Teach Kids About Money My children are still young and I have a lot to teach them about money. I believe that managing money is important and I want to make sure my kids learn money skills to last a lifetime. With the brand new school year approaching, I feel confident that we will make wise money decisions during the year and teach important money skills along the way.

How to Teach Kids About Money

    1. Be the example. If they see you spending money on things, they may be more willing to spend their money, too. If you save your money and talk about saving your money, your child will pick up on that and may choose to save their money vs. spending it. Talk about why you are saving your money (to pay off debts, to save for your future, their college, or even to give to others!) 2. Give your child/children a special place to keep their money. Kids love crafts. Allow your children to make piggy banks out of empty containers or boxes. If you don't want to go the crafty route, you can purchase a piggy bank as a gift for them to get them excited about saving money. I recommend the Money Savvy Pig since it has compartments for saving, spending, donating, and investing. 3. Give your child special jobs to earn money. Kids love to help! They also love to earn money! Teach them that through hard work, they can earn some money. It doesn't have to be a lot of money. Even $5 a week seems like a lot to young children. I know that some parents do not like to offer allowances, but it's up to the parents. We do like to give an allowance and we like to give our children their own money to save and spend. 4. Allow your child to complete the purchasing process. By this, I mean that when you go shopping, let your child pick out what they need, place it in the cart, and even pay for it with their own money at the register. My girls love receiving change back from the cashier after making purchases. 5. Be patient with your children and communicate with them. Especially when it comes to saving. Some children will want to spend their money right away and buy things that we consider "junk." Talk to your children throughout each purchase to make sure that when they are spending their money, they are being smart about what they are buying. Every now and then it's okay to buy toys, etc., but we don't want to teach them habits of buying stuff they don't need just because they have money. How do you teach your kids about finances and saving money?
