Did you know that Black Eyed Peas are considered “good luck” for the new year?

Why are Black Eyed Peas good luck?

According to Wikipedia:

The peas, since they swell when cooked, symbolize prosperity; the greens (or cabbage) symbolize money; the pork, because pigs root forward when foraging, represents positive motion. Cornbread, which represents gold, also often accompanies this meal.

Whether or not that’s true, you can be sure we are going to have them every New Year’s Day!

Do you serve Black Eyed Peas at the beginning of each new year? If not, what are you waiting for?! This Black Eyed Peas with Bacon Recipe is perfect to try. Eating black eyed peas for the new year is a tradition in our family since I was a young girl.

Here’s a great recipe to enjoy at the beginning of every new year or with any southern meal throughout the year! The secret to this recipe? The BACON! The flavor that the bacon adds to this Black Eyed Peas with Bacon Recipe is amazing!

What can I add to Black Eyed Peas for flavor? What do you season black eyed peas with?

For this recipe, I use onion soup mix because it’s quick and simple and adds an amazing flavor to the black eyed peas. You can also use herbs such as rosemary, sage, thyme, or parsley. Use these herbs fresh or finely chopped.

Do you need to soak dried black eyed peas before cooking?

You do not have to soak the black eyed peas before cooking. However, soaking the black eyed peas does cut down on the cooking time by about an hour or 30 minutes.

How long does it take to cook black eyed peas?

Cooking black eyed peas can be a quick and easy process. Depending on how you decide to prepare them, it usually takes anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour to cook them.

If you choose to boil the beans, make sure you start by soaking them overnight in cold water. The next day, drain the beans if desired (not necessary) and transfer them into a pot filled with boiling water – this should take about 20-30 minutes before they are cooked through.

Alternatively, if you choose to pressure cook your black eyed peas, your cooking time is drastically reduced!

All you have to do is rinse the beans before adding them into the pressure cooker along with some broth or stock of your choice.

Then simply set the timer according to your pressure cooker and you’ll have perfectly cooked black eyed peas!

No matter how you choose to cook them, black eyed peas are a great source of plant-based protein and can be very versatile in the kitchen. So give them a try and see how long it takes to get them just right – bon appetit!

What can you pair black eyed peas with?

When it comes to black eyed peas, there are plenty of delicious dishes you can pair them with.

From classic Southern-style collard greens to black bean and corn salsa, black eyed peas make the perfect accompaniment for any meal.

They also pair deliciously with Tex-Mex favorites like tacos and fajitas. You can even get creative and use black eyed peas as a base for soups or curries!

Yes, you can put bacon in black eyed peas! In fact, I prefer bacon in my own personal recipe! The recipe below shows you how you can add bacon to your recipe, too.

Do you cook bacon before adding to black eyed peas?

Cooking bacon before adding it to black eyed peas is a great way to add an extra layer of flavor and texture.

The bacon fat adds richness and enhances the smoky, savory taste of the black-eyed peas.

Plus, you can cook your bacon in advance so you don’t have to worry about doing it while cooking your beans!

Start by preheating the oven or stovetop before cooking the bacon until crispy.

Then drain off any excess grease and add it to your cooked black-eyed peas right before serving.
