My oldest daughter started 4th grade recently. She is required to read daily for at least 30 minutes every night as a homework assignment. On the weekends, her time is increased to 45 minutes. One of the best times to get in reading time is at bed time! She loves to read alone, but lately, she enjoys me reading to her at night. I pick a book out to read and then read a few pages at a time until it’s time for bed. We read from a variety of books – fiction, non-fiction, joke books, etc. I like to mix it up to keep it interesting for my daughter and for myself!
We recently received a few books that we’ve added to my daughter’s reading list. I’m excited to share about one book in particular, because even as an adult, this book is interesting for me. The National Geographic Kids Almanac 2019 is full of fun facts and fiction for kids about a variety of topics including animals, science and technology, space and earth, nature, history, geography, nature, and more.
Every page is full of colorful photos that are interesting and help keep kids engaged in reading. This almanac is fun to flip through and read together with your child, or great for your child to read alone! Plus, your child will love the games included throughout the book. My daughter really loved the fill in the blank games that gave us a chance to practice nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, and more. We giggled a lot when we read through the silly stories.
Another book that we added to our reading list is Explorer Academy: The Nebula Secret, by Trudi Trueit. This book is full of fun, action, and adventures and geared towards children ages 8-12. My daughter is slowly getting into fictional adventure books. She does like that there are puzzles and codes throughout the book that keep her engaged and wanting to read more.
These books are great gift ideas to give to kids as birthday gifts or even holiday gifts! Consider adding these books to your own home library or classroom library!
