  • Are Your Kids Involved In Too Many Activities This Summer?

Are Your Kids Involved In Too Many Activities This Summer

Extracurricular activities are a great way for your kids to socialize with others, burn off some energy and learn important life skills. They are tons of fun, and there are always plenty to choose from.

Unfortunately, however, when it comes to extracurricular activities, it is possible to have too much of a good thing. Are you worried that your children are involved in too many activities this summer? Here are five signs you will definitely want to watch out for.

    1. Your Child Doesn’t Seem Interested in the Activities Anymore

While it is normal for your children to like some activities more than others, if your child suddenly dreads going to activities they previously loved, you probably want to start asking why. The most common causes are because something is going on (like bullying) or because your child is just plain tired from always going to so many activities. Either way, you will want to know so you can address the problem.

    2. Your Child Needs to Be Constantly Entertained

As good as extracurricular activities are for children, a little bit of boredom is good for them as well. Having downtime with nothing to do forces kids to learn to use their imaginations and entertain themselves. If your child needs to be constantly entertained, it may be because they never have a break to learn how to deal with boredom.

    3. Your Child’s Demeanor Has Changed

Has your child gone from energetic, fun and happy to constantly tired, worn out, anxious or irritable? A stuffed schedule might be to blame. While kids often seem like never ending balls of energy, the truth is that they need downtime to rest and recharge as well.

    4. Your Family Doesn’t Have Time for Other Activities

When is the last time your family had dinner together or sat around playing cards or watching a movie? When your child is involved in too many activities, important family bonding moments like these often go by the way-side. If your family is constantly missing out on family experiences, it may be time to start eliminating things from your schedule.

    5. Your Family’s Relationships are Suffering

When your schedule is jam-packed, it isn’t long until your relationships begin to suffer as well. Have you or your child stopped hanging out with old friends because you’re always too busy? Are relationships in your family suffering due to a lack of time together? As helpful as extracurricular activities are, having the time and opportunity to grow i relationships with others is every bit as important.

How many activities is your child involved in this summer? Does that number seem just right for your family, or do you worry that it is too much?

  • How to Use Your Tax Refund

Not sure what to do with your tax refund? Consider purchasing or upgrading your smart phone! Here’s how to use your tax refund towards a smart phone.

how to use your tax refund

As a busy mom, I rely on my smartphone to help keep myself organized, informed, and updated. I use my smartphone on a daily basis for personal and business reasons. Because I use my phone regularly every day, it’s important for me to have a fast and reliable phone and service plan.

The tax season is here and my husband and I were thankful to get a tax refund this year. We used part of our tax refund to upgrade our smartphones and cell phone service. We were paying way too much for our previous plan.

Now that we are saving about $50 per month after switching our plan, we will be putting more money away towards our retirement accounts and our kid’s college accounts each month. The additional money left over on our tax refund went towards our personal savings, too.

As a busy mom and small business owner, I use my smartphone features often. Below are twelve ways I use my smartphone as a mom and how you can use them, too!

11 “Smart” Ways I Use My Smartphone

    1. Photos and Videos:

I have three children. I take photos and videos on a daily basis so that I can share them with my family that lives hundreds of miles away. We have an eight month old baby and these photos and videos allow my family to watch my baby boy grow up, even though they are far away.

    2. Calendar and Alarm Clock:

I use my calendar on a regular basis to schedule events and activities. I love being able to add important dates into the calendar and receive notifications. I also use the alarm clock feature during the week when I need to wake up my oldest daughter to get ready for school!

    3. Music:

Going to the gym is a regular part of my routine. I try to workout at least 3-5 days a week. When I workout, I use my phone to stream music so that I stay motivated during my toughest workouts!

    4. Weather App:

It’s the middle of March on the East Coast and it’s snowing today! I would have never known that it was going to snow without my weather app! We were able to prepare for a day of snow today and get outside to make a few snowballs. I use the weather app to see how we should dress the family most days.

    5. Calling and Texting:

Keeping in touch with my family is important to me. My family lives several states way. I try to keep in touch on a regular basis either by calling or texting them. I text my mom and sister often!

    6. Email:

I check my email several times a day on my smartphone. I have two email accounts, a personal account and a business account. I’m able to stay on top of my emails when I’m out and about.

    7. Kids Apps:

When I’m out and about and need to keep the kids entertained, I allow my children to play educational kids apps on my smartphone.

    8. Internet:

The internet is at my fingertips anytime I need to search for something online, read articles, or visit my favorite websites. I’m able to use the internet for business purposes, too.

    9. Social Media:

I have all major forms of social media downloaded onto my phone including Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube. I can keep up with family and friends via social media or schedule out important social media posts for the brands I work with during the day.

    10. Banking:

I’m able to check in our bank accounts through my smartphone as well as deposit checks, transfer money, and keep up with daily transactions.

    11. Shopping:

Anytime I need to shop, I can get on my smartphone, browse my favorite retailers, and checkout easily.

As you can see, I use my smartphone for a variety of reasons on a daily basis. I need the extra data for this reason! I would highly recommend using part of your tax refund to upgrade your phone!

What do you plan to do with your tax refund this year?

    How to Make Marble Playdough

My girls and I have been getting creative in the kitchen with lots of fun crafts and activities! They love to work on these activities with me and I have fun spending time with them. Recently, my oldest daughter came up to me and randomly told me that I was the best mom ever because I participate these fun activities with them. That comment was motivation enough to keep planning fun crafts and activities with them while they are young!

We like to make our own playdough since it’s affordable and easy to make. We can make a big batch of it and store it for future play time. With summer approaching, make your own playdough and store it so that your kids will be entertained during the summer instead of getting bored! For this recipe, the playdough turned out a little different and we decided to call it “Marble Playdough!”

    How to Make Marble Playdough

This is a messy activity and you’ll want to make sure you are well prepared for the tiny messes that are made while making Marble Playdough. I highly recommend you clean as you go instead of saving the messes until the end. To make cleaning as you go an easy task, keep Huggies Simply Clean Wipes on hand. These are perfect to use for tiny hands.

There’s not a lot of supplies involved when making Marble Playdough. This is one reason why we like making playdough so much.

    How to Make Marble Playdough

    How to Make Marble Playdough:

    Supplies:

    • 4 cups of Flour
    • 1 1/2 cups of Salt
    • 1 1/4 cup of Water
    • 6 tbsp. Cooking Oil
    • Food Coloring

    How to Make Marble Playdough

    1. In a large mixing bowl, add water.

    2. Add flour and salt and mix well. *You may need to add a little bit of water/oil to get the consistency that you would like. Be careful though — you don’t want it to get too sticky and gooey! Add more flour if that happens!

    How to Make Marble Playdough

Little hands will get messy and the table will, too. Remember to clean with Huggies Simply Clean wipes as you go!

    How to Make Marble Playdough

    3. Form mixture into balls and separate into zipper bags.

    How to Make Marble Playdough

    4. Add about 4-6 drops of food coloring inside each bag on the playdough.

    5. While the playdough is still in the bag, mix dough and food coloring by pressing onto the bag and squishing it around. Be careful as you do not want the bag to open up during this process.

    6. Once the dough is mixed with food coloring well, you’ll have a marble playdough look! Now it’s time to allow the kids to play with the playdough and have a great time!

    7. When finished playing with playdough, store dough in air tight containers or in zipper bags.

  • Money Saving Goals for the New Year

Money Saving Goal for the New Year

Another Christmas holiday has come and gone. As I think about a brand new year, I’m able to reflect on our December 2016 holiday budget. My husband and I went into December with a plan for every dollar. Our goal was to spend our money on practical gifts for our kids all while paring down the amount of gifts that we would purchase. Now that January is here, I can say that we did a good job of sticking to our budget, but there were a few areas that have room for improvement.

In the middle of December, I wrote a post on How to Simplify Gift Giving. In this post, I discussed a plan for keeping the holidays simple and keeping holiday gifts limited to a certain amount.

While I still feel this is an excellent plan, I must honestly confess that I had a hard time sticking to the plan. One of the reasons I had a hard time sticking to the plan was because of past mistakes we made during the holidays with overspending and overbuying. I guess I could say that I was a bit nervous paring down gifts to only four this year after buying way too many gifts for my girls in the past. Maybe I think my simplified gift giving would hurt my girls’ feelings if they didn’t receive a lot on Christmas morning. Maybe I’m afraid they will think Santa thought they weren’t good children this year. I do still like to see my children rip open a variety of gifts on Christmas morning because I love seeing the excitement on their faces. More gifts means more time spent enjoying the morning, right?!

Even though we didn’t stick to the plan completely, I do feel that I was smarter about the gifts we did choose to buy this year. Instead of just four gifts in each category (want, need, wear, read) we bought a few gifts for each child in each category, including an added “eat” category. When shopping for gifts, I tried to find and buy gifts that I felt my children needed but gifts that were still considered “cool” to receive in their eyes – things like Trolls movie socks, Shopkins underwear, winter gear that could be used in our new location that we will be moving to in April and even a new pair of shoes for my youngest daughter.

I do feel that if I would have started out every Christmas in the past this way of keeping gifts to a minimum, it would be easy to stick to the plan, but after 8 Christmas’ where I’ve gone a little overboard, it’s hard to go from many gifts to just a few. I want to simplify gifts eventually and save more money during future holidays, but it will take some time and self-discipline. I’d love to get back to the true meaning of Christmas and eventually give more to others than to ourselves. There’s always next year!

If you are sitting here in the new year thinking about how you may have gone overboard this Christmas, be kind to yourself. It’s a brand new year and it’s time to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and start going for those goals you’ve set for yourself and your personal finances this year. The past is the past and let’s look forward to making improvements, knocking down debt, saving for our future, and giving more to others this year.

Money Saving Goals for the New Year

This year, we have plenty of savings goals that we plan to stick to. A few of our family goals include the following:

    • Completing a No Spend Challenge in January
    • Sticking to our monthly budget
    • Continue to cut back on eating out at restaurants
    • Continue listening to helpful money saving podcasts and read books about saving money

These goals will be able to help us stay on track financially this year so that we can aggressively pay off our only debt – our rental home. We also want to save for our retirement and put more money away in our children’s college accounts. We want to give more to our church and to others in need. It’s a new year and I’m already excited about our money saving goals this year.

  • How to Make Brushing Teeth Fun

Do you struggle to get your kids to brush their teeth? Here are tips for how to make brushing teeth fun for kids!

As a mom, it can be frustrating at times to get our kids to brush their teeth every day. I find myself asking my girls to head upstairs to brush their teeth only to hear moans and groans and disappointment.

How to Get Toddlers To Brush Their Teeth

However, I recently updated their toothbrushes and it has made a big difference in this process for us. It only took one simple swap for my girls to change their attitudes about brushing their teeth.

We made the switch to Firefly products simply for the reason that they are designed to help turn brush time into playtime! I don’t mind my kids having a little fun while brushing their teeth if it helps get the job done!

    Firefly Spiderman Fluoride Rinse

We also added Firefly Spiderman Fluoride Rinse from Walmart to use during their tooth brushing routine. My girls quickly fell in love with the “Amazing Melon” flavor of the rinse. They can be very picky about flavors, but this fluoride rinse was perfect for them. They love the little cup that goes with the mouthwash as it helps them to use the correct amount each time.

It’s a good idea as a parent to teach your kids when using this rinse how to use it appropriately and to make sure they are only using it once or twice a day during their brushing routine! My youngest wanted to use it often during the day and I had to remind her that it was meant just for tooth brushing time! Adding the Firefly Spiderman Fluoride Rinse to my girl’s brushing routine has become something my girls look forward to daily.

Did you know that it’s a good idea to replace toothbrushes once every three months?

Kids don’t get to have all the fun for themselves! My husband and I updated our toothbrushes, too. It was time to make the switch to quality toothbrushes because we had our old toothbrushes for a little over 3 months. We’ve trusted the REACH brand for quite some time and love our new toothbrushes. We chose the REACH Advanced Design Toothbrush at Walgreens and the REACH Ultra Clean Toothbrush at Target.

The REACH UltraClean toothbrush provides a complete clean feeling with floss-like bristles and a tongue cleaner. This toothbrush is perfect to have handy for guests staying the night or in every bag so you’ll always have a toothbrush on the go. The REACH Advanced Design Toothbrush has longer outer bristles and shorter inner bristles to perfectly clean along the gum line and the plaque from every tooth.

Choosing quality toothbrushes for the entire family is important to me. I take tooth brushing seriously in our family and only want the best products for us. When three months goes by, we will continue to replace our toothbrushes with Firefly and REACH products!

  • Morning Routine Tips for Moms

It can be tough getting out the door every morning as a busy mom! There’s so much to do. Read our Morning Routine Tips for Moms to help!

    Morning Routine Tips for Moms

The morning can be a bit chaotic if not planned out well. Do you find yourself in a frazzled mess every morning trying to get everyone fed, dressed, and out of the door on time? If so, this is for you! Follow these seven steps to speed up your morning routine and get out the door faster!

    Morning Routine Tips for Moms

Set items out the night before.

This includes your clothes, children’s clothes, shoes, keys, wallet, purse, phones, backpacks and other school belongings. It’s easy to waste time in the morning trying to figure out what to wear as well as looking for lost wallets, keys, and school items. Save yourself some time and place these items out the night before so you aren’t caught looking in the toy boxes for your keys. If you have young children, consider a hanging closet organizer to organize their clothes for the week. Have siblings help other siblings get dressed if they are old enough.

    Stay off of electronic gadgets.

Over the past few years, I’ve changed the way I use technology. I’ve been very guilty of checking my email in the morning and even scrolling through Facebook to check updates when I should be getting ready for the morning. After deciding to place strict limits on my electronics time in the morning, I easily gained an extra 15-20 minutes of time and stopped feeling rushed. I use my extra time to snuggle or read with my girls, as well as play outside in the backyard for a few minutes before school. Sometimes I’m able to tidy up a room in the house or do a load of dishes!

Prepare school or office lunches the night before.

Mommy confession: I hate packing lunches. I giggle often at how my husband and I beg each other to make the kid’s lunches. It’s definitely not on our “favorite things to do” list and ends up costing us 5-10 minutes in the morning to figure out what to pack in their lunchboxes for school. Prepare your child’s lunch or your own lunch for the office at night and they’ll be ready to go in the morning!

Establish a good morning routine with the kids.

Young children thrive on routines so if children know what they are expected to do in the morning, this will save you a LOT of time. It will also help cut down on the screaming and yelling that may go on when trying to get kids to listen in the morning! My girls LOVE Daniel Tiger on PBS. One of our favorite songs on Daniel Tiger goes like this, “Clothes On, Eat Breakfast, Brush Teeth, Put On Shoes, and Off To School!”  This song helps them to remember the steps of getting dressed and out the door each morning! (Thanks, Daniel Tiger for making our life easier around here!)

Take baths and showers the night before.

Save time in the morning by giving the kids a bath or taking showers the night before. It takes me about 20 minutes to blow dry my hair. I have thick hair and to get it completely dry, I spend a lot of time on my hair when I could be enjoying my morning. By taking a shower and blow drying my hair at night, I save about 30 minutes altogether in the morning.

    Invest in a Keurig.

If you have room in your budget and you are a coffee drinker, consider investing in a single cup coffee maker. My husband and I have had a Keurig for several years and it would be very hard to go back to a traditional coffee maker! These are great to have if you are on-the-go and need to make a quick cup of coffee and get out the door in a hurry!

    Keep breakfast simple.

There’s no need to cook a hot breakfast for the family each morning, unless you just really love doing it. Serve cereal a few days a week or toast with fresh fruit every now and then to give yourself a break and to save time!

Enjoy these time saving tips for a more successful morning each day!

  • Spring Cleaning Tips for Busy Moms

Spring is here! When the spring season approaches, several moms that I know use the warmer days to catch up on much needed cleaning.

During the winter season, the family is usually cooped up inside and that means messes are inevitable.

When my kids are entertaining themselves inside our home, I can expect tiny messes here and there.

My husband and I are getting better about teaching them to clean up their messes as they go, but we are still far away from mastering this goal!

    1. Open the blinds and let natural light in.

When I get up in the morning, the first thing I do is open up my blinds to let the sunshine in.

There’s something about natural light that lifts my mood and helps motivate me to get my day started, especially on days when I know I need to focus on spring cleaning.

    2. Gather your cleaning supplies.

Grab everything you need to get your spring cleaning done and place it in a specific area. By doing this, you’ll have everything ready and on hand to get your cleaning done, without having to search for cleaning products and supplies.

I always have my broom and dust pan, vacuum, paper towels, and a few other items on hand when I start cleaning.

    3. Turn on your favorite music.

Music is a huge part of my cleaning routine. When there’s music, you can be sure I’m going to get energized and pumped about cleaning my house.

I turn on my iPod and sing and dance around the house while cleaning. Music gives me the extra boost I need to get the job done!

    4. Send the kids outside to play or ask them to help.

If your kids are old enough to head outdoors to play in the backyard, send them outside to play while you get some cleaning done!

You can also ask them to help with household chores if you feel like the task is too big. Many hands make light work!

    5. Declutter.

Before you can get to the deep cleaning in the house, it’s a good idea to remove clutter from problem areas that need the most cleaning.

For me, my kitchen counters always need decluttering before I can get to the actual deep cleaning.

Set a bag or box aside during your spring cleaning and place any objects that no longer serve a purpose or bring you joy in your home.

    6. Spend time on the most used areas first.

It’s easy to get sidetracked while spring cleaning, mostly because there’s always a lot that needs to be done.

Focus on the problematic areas first, the areas that you spend most of your time and the ones that seem to be the most important to you and your family. For me, the area that I start with is the kitchen.

I focus on the sinks, the microwave, the stove and oven, the refrigerator/freezer, pantry, and the floors. Then I move to the bathrooms, the living room, the bedroom, and then all other rooms.

The garage is usually the last place I work on.

    7. Remember that spring cleaning takes time. Celebrate small victories.

Spring cleaning can be hard work. Over time, things in the home pile up and get dirty (especially during a busy winter season).

Focus on getting what you can done and then give yourself plenty of breaks during your spring cleaning.

Spring cleaning can take days and even weeks, so don’t stress if you can’t get it all done in one day!

Hopefully these tips will help motivate you to start your spring cleaning!
