Frequently Asked Questions
Can I substitute all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour?
You can use whole wheat flour, but it will make the bread denser and heartier. For a lighter texture, try using half whole wheat and half all-purpose flour.
Is it possible to use a sugar alternative like honey or maple syrup?
You can use liquid sweeteners like honey or maple syrup, but you may need to adjust the amount of milk to maintain the right consistency of the batter.
Can I make this recipe dairy-free?
To make this dairy-free, you can substitute the milk with a plant-based milk like almond or soy milk, and use a dairy-free butter alternative.
What can I use instead of caraway seeds?
If you’re not a fan of caraway seeds, you can omit them or substitute them with an equal amount of fennel seeds, or a mix of orange zest and thyme for a different flavor profile.
Can I make this bread with fewer raisins or without them?
You can reduce the amount of raisins or omit them altogether. You can also replace them with other dried fruits like cranberries or chopped apricots.
How can I tell if the bread is fully baked?
The bread is done when a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, and the top is golden brown. It usually takes about 40-45 minutes.
Can I bake this in a loaf pan instead of a square pan?
You can use a loaf pan. Just be aware that the baking time might need to be adjusted slightly longer.
How should I store the leftover bread?
Store the bread wrapped in foil or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
Is this bread suitable for freezing?
This bread freezes well. Wrap it tightly in plastic wrap and then foil. It can be frozen for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or gently warm in the oven before serving.
Can I add nuts to this recipe?
Adding nuts like walnuts or pecans can add a nice crunch. About ½ to ¾ cup should be enough.
