  • How to Get Work Done with Kids at Home

It can be a challenge to get work done with kids at home. Read our tips on How to Get Work Done with Kids at Home to see how you can balance your work as well as spending time with the kids, too!

How to Get Work Done with Kids at Home

For many work-at-home moms, it seems like the distractions never end.

From the laundry to the phone calls to the errands, there is always something around the house demanding their attention. With kids at home, this makes concentrating on certain tasks during a work day a bit more difficult.

When my kids stayed at home with me during working hours, I tried my very best to plan time to work as well as plan time to be present. I learned that I could still work from home, but I wanted to make sure I had a good balance between work and kids.

While the abundance of distractions can be a problem at any time of year, it often hits its peak at the beginning of the summer. The kids are out of school, the weather is amazing, and it’s incredibly difficult to get anything done.

For those of us who are used to working while the kids are in school, working from home with the kids underfoot can present quite the challenge.

Thankfully, however, it is possible to get your work done without sacrificing your kids’ summer (or your sanity) in the process. Here’s how.

How to Get Work Done with Kids at Home

    1. Lay Out Ground Rules

In order for this to work, everyone needs to be on the same page with the same expectations. Therefore, you’ll need to lay out some ground rules ahead of time so everyone knows what to expect.

For example, you will want to set rules concerning what the kids can and cannot do or go while you are working and how often they are allowed to ask you for things.

    2. Schedule Office Hours

Without set office hours, you’ll inevitably spend all day on the computer, never really getting anything accomplished. Combat this by alternating between intentional and focused time with your kids and periods of interrupted work.

Try to schedule these blocks at the same time every day so your kids know what to expect. You might also want to work as much as you can before or after your kids wake up or while they are napping.

    3. Arrange for Childcare

While being able to give your children all of the undivided attention in the world would be ideal, if you are struggling to balance work and home life without any help, you aren’t doing anyone any favors.

It is okay to sign your children up for childcare or summer classes so you can get some work done. If you can’t afford paid care, set up a trade with friends so you both get some quiet time.

    4. Find Ways to Keep Your Kids Busy

If you absolutely must work with your kids around, get creative in finding things for them to do to keep them occupied.

You might create busy boxes for them to rotate through, set them up with books and coloring pages, or even let them watch movies on occasion.

Find an activity they’ll consider a special treat and only let them do it during your work time, and they’ll stay occupied for hours.

    5. Use Your Time Wisely

The truth is, no matter how you prepare, you likely are never going to get as much done with your kids around as you did while they were in school.

This means that using your time wisely is more crucial than ever. Start every day with a to-do list so you waste less time between activities, and always cross off the most important items first.

That way, if you don’t get a lot done, you will have at least accomplished the tasks that matter most.

How will you keep your kids entertained so you can get some work done?

  • Camping Essentials for Families

Are you planning a camping trip with your family? Here’s my list of camping essentials for families!

    Camping Essentials for Families

Summer is here and many families are planning summer vacations, daily outings, and fun activities including camping!

Camping is a popular activity to take advantage of in the summer months. I have several memories of camping with my family and every year we got smarter about what to bring with us so that the entire family would have a great time.

If you are planning a summer camping trip, consider these camping essentials.

    Camping Essentials for Families

    Large tent + sleeping gear

Choose a quality tent that will sleep your entire family comfortably if you aren’t camping in a cabin, RV, or pop up camper.

You also want to make sure every member of the family has sleeping gear including sleeping bags, pillows, and/or sheets.

You can also bring egg crate foam to place at the bottom of the tent or on top of a pop up camper/RV mattress if you are looking for more comfort.

We placed a mattress foam topper on the mattress in our pop up camper and we slept well!

    Sunscreen

A sunburn can ruin the camping fun in no time. Keep the family safe in the sun by applying sunscreen several times a day while camping.

    Bug spray

Bugs can be annoying for any family member camping.

Keep bug spray on hand to repel insects and to help prevent bug bites.

Placing citronella candles around your campsite is another option. Just be sure to monitor the open flames and keep candles out of children’s reach.

    First aid kit

It can be easy to get scratches and other minor scrapes or cuts when camping, especially when hiking.

Keep a well stocked first aid kit on hand with band aids, antibiotic ointment, and other first aid supplies.

    Portable Camping Chairs

Pack plenty of portable camping chairs for the family so that everyone has a place to sit comfortably at your campsite.

We recently received the GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker chairs as a gift and they are our FAVORITE chairs!

    Lanterns and Flashlights

Bring plenty of lighting options to help light up your campsite at night! Lighting includes lanterns, flashlights, headlamps, hanging lights, and more.

These lighting items will come in handy for playing games around the table, or even walking to the campground restroom when needed!

Portable coffee maker (for mom and dad!)

If you are a coffee drinker, you don’t have to miss out on your daily coffee!

While you most likely won’t have access to a coffee maker, you can use a portable coffee maker to make yourself a quick and convenient cup.

    Summer Backyard BBQ Entertaining Tips

The summer season is here and we are soaking up the sun in the Pacific Northwest! The kids didn’t get out of school until mid-June, but for anyone that lives in this area, that’s about the time that the sun starts to peek out and the weather gets warmer. I’m from the south and I’m not used to waiting that long for summer to arrive!

Our summer has already been full of fun. There are many beautiful beaches and hikes to take in the Washington area that we’ve been taking advantage of as a family.

    summer fun

We recently went on a camping trip to the West Coast and are planning more camping trips in the near future.

    IMG_1204

The kids just finished up a week of Vacation Bible School and we have another week of VBS planned in a couple of weeks. Swim lessons are scheduled for August. Other than that, our days are filled with plenty of play time, sleeping in, watching T.V., and family gatherings!

We’ve been entertaining guests since mid-June and before school let out for the summer. My sister and my nephew came to visit in the middle of June. My in-laws came soon after and are staying for another week. My brother will be coming in for a short visit tomorrow! I’m excited that we are having so much company coming in to visit us. With that being said, I’ve had my hands full with entertaining and it has been much fun!

My husband and I love to host backyard BBQs. He’s an expert at grilling and I’m the expert at eating up the delicious goodies he cooks for all of us. 😉 I guess I could say that I’m good at providing the fun and festive decor that goes along with BBQs. I try to keep the themes family friendly since we have three kids that we entertain at our own parties. This means plenty of easy throw-away party supplies like plates, cups, napkins, plastic ware, and snack bowls. For our most recent backyard BBQ, I picked up bright and festive party supplies. We also served the following delicious goodies that I recommend serving at your next backyard BBQ!

    1. All Natural Cuts of Meat

My husband is the grill master. He cooked up three cuts of meat from Fareway Meat Market including pork, steak, and beef patties for hamburgers. He grilled the pork and steak for the adults and the hamburgers for the kids! The pork chops were grilled with a BBQ sauce rub for extra flavor and the steaks were extra juicy! When hosting your next backyard BBQ, include a variety of condiments and extras with your hamburgers including mayo, mustard, pickles, tomatoes, onions, lettuce, and cheese!

    2. Crunchy Snacks

Add crunchy snacks for your guests to munch on at your next backyard BBQ. Popchips are perfect for serving in little cups for your guests. There are a few different flavors that we tried including Zesty Jalapeño Cheddar, Barbeque, and Buffalo Ranch Ridges. I served my Popchips plain, but these tasty treats can also be served with dips. Dips are another great addition to your event. Serve each flavor of Popchips and ask your guests which flavor is their favorite! My favorite flavor was the Barbeque flavor! My husband loves spicy flavors and he enjoyed the Zesty Jalapeño Cheddar Popchips the most.

There are a variety of flavors to choose from including original, peach, half & half, and raspberry!

  • How to Create a Summer Routine

How to Create a Summer Routine

It’s the first day of summer! Are you ready? While summer may seem like a great time to simply kick back and relax without a whole lot going on, the truth is that if you want to make this an awesome summer, you’re going to have to plan ahead.

Whether your family has a lot going on or your schedule is relatively free, a summer routine is essential. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself rushing from activity to activity, forgetting things along the way, or you’ll find yourself wasting days on end not doing much of anything because you didn’t plan ahead.

Personally, since I work from home, I know I need a routine to make sure that I get the work done that I need to do while also making sure that I have plenty of time to spend making awesome memories with the kids.

How to Create a Summer Routine

Depending on how much you love or hate schedules and to-do lists, your schedule can be fairly loose or rather rigid. It’s all up to what works best for you and your family! Here are two different options–feel free to choose the one that works best for you, or use a combination of both!

    Daily Routine

Daily routines are perfect for moms who follow the same basic routine pretty much every day. They help you designate which times of day you will do each activity so you don’t accidentally let the entire day slip by.

Take a piece of paper and write the hours of the day going down the left hand side. Then, fill in all of the events that happen pretty much the same time every day. For example, you may fill in the hours you work, the times your children nap and the times you prepare and eat meals every day. Note when everyone wakes up and goes to sleep as well.

Once you see what blocks of time you have left, fill them with the tasks that are most important to you. For example, you might choose to take a walk or go to the park or the library in the mornings or to go to the local pool in the afternoons. This way, you have those times already set aside and can be prepared to make the most of them. Plus, it will help your children know what to expect too.

    Monthly Calendar

Perhaps your daily schedule is all over the place but you want to make sure you find the opportunities to take your kids on outings throughout the summer. This is where a monthly calendar comes in handy.

Print out a blank calendar template. Jot down any important events or activities you already have planned, such as soccer games, ballet lessons or summer school. Once you see which days you have open, start jotting in trips you’d like to take with your kids. These trips don’t have to be set in stone–in fact, you may even want to write in pencil–but simply having them on the calendar will help you be more intentional about taking the kids on fun outings you always mean to get around to.

Have you started thinking about what types of fun activities you’d like to do with your children this summer? What do you have planned?

  • 5 Ways for Moms to Relax this Summer

5 Ways for Moms to Relax this Summer

The kids have been home for summer break for almost one month now. I’ve been trying my best to keep the kids busy and entertained this summer with both indoor and outdoor activities. We go to the pool on a regular basis and we also spend time indoors coloring, playing games, watching t.v. and whatever else we can find to do to pass up time during these hot summer months! As a mom, the summer routine can be a bit hectic. While it’s nice to skip the alarm clocks during the summer and snooze more often, you may be feeling overwhelmed if it’s your responsibility to entertain the kids all summer. By now, you may be seeking more alone time to yourself and needing time away from the kids! Summer will fly by, but until then, take some time to relax!

5 Ways for Moms to Relax this Summer

    1. Sleep in. I love the summer because I don’t have to set the alarm clock! Use this time to sleep in if your kids sleep in, too. If you are an early riser, use the quiet time for yourself and enjoy a hot cup of coffee in peace!

    2. Take advantage of nap times. Catch up on your favorite shows or read a book during your child’s nap time (or take a nap, too!)

    3. Join a gym with childcare. If you are feeling overwhelmed by having the kids at home all day, consider joining a gym that offers childcare. Some gyms offer to watch your children for up to 2 hours while you take naps in the locker room workout.

    4. Plan a bubble bath regularly. Schedule an evening bubble bath one or two days a week after dad gets home. Sneak away for a bath time retreat while dad handles the kids.

    5. Enjoy your favorite treats in a quite place. I like to sit out on the back porch in the lounge chair in the evenings after a long day and enjoy my favorite wholesome summer treats.

Moms: Don’t forget to take time to relax this summer!
